Kontron Announces AdvancedMC Intelligent IO Modules, Supports Linux

Kontron has announced its AdvancedMC packet processor IO modules - the Kontron AM42xx Intelligent IO series that are available now for full production orders. The Kontron AM42xx AdvancedMC modules have two key advantages - one, performance: Based on the OCTEON Plus CN5650 packet processors with 12 x 64bit MIPS cores, the Kontron AM42xx modules boast up to 14.4 billion MIPS64 instructions per second (14.4 GOPS) and are optimized for layer 4 to layer 7 data and security processing. Two, each module offers cost savings. This is because each OCTEON Plus processor has integrated PCIe and XAUI bridges, thus saving the cost of two external bridge chips on the AdvancedMC module. Each processor additionally enables 10GbE direct to the processor.

AMD Releases Open-Source R600/700 3D Code for Linux

AMD has released code on the ATI R600 series concerning 3D acceleration so that the open-source Linux drivers can begin to support the newer ATI graphics processors. This Linux code is needed to begin fostering the development of an open-source R600 3D driver. The microcode for the newest GPUs has also been released. Novell, AMD, and Red Hat developers have been doing a majority of the work taking advantage of the documentation, while internally at AMD they have been working to prepare the R600 documentation for release. Additionally, work has been performed to decide what code or documentation is needed for programming, sanitize it of any information not relevant to bringing up the 3D engine, remove any details concerning future ATI hardware, and then getting all of this work cleared by AMD's lead software and hardware architects so that it can be publicly released without any NDAs or other strings attached.

SYS-CON White Paper: Improving Software Development Success with ActivePerl

It is easy to sympathize with software developers trying to build large, complex enterprise software solutions. At the start, a software development project is like a smooth sheet of ice: full of possibility. It’s a clean slate, free from architectural flaws, bugs, and broken code. But once the first line of code is written, complexities begin to layer one on top of the other. No matter what the end product, many of the same stumbling blocks come up time and again and get in the way of project success. Some classic pitfalls include time restraints, insufficient in-house resources, scope creep, and spiraling development costs. So how do software developers minimize these obstacles and improve their chances for better, faster, more cost-effective software development? In this paper, we present the open source Perl programming language as a solution for avoiding typical software development foibles.
